Marine exhaust scrubbing

The problem

Ships have to cut the sulphur content of their exhaust. Scrubbers do the job, but the best of them consume 2 to 3 per cent of engine power and can stand 10 metres tall and 2 to 4 metres wide per exhaust line.

What the Lynx separator does

The Lynx separator makes the scrubbing step smaller by removing liquid and particles from the exhaust flow.

A smaller unit is what makes a retrofit realistic on a ship that is already in service.

The design scales up. For ship exhaust it was drawn for outlets up to 6 metres in diameter.

INVENTAS and MAROFF

Project partners from 2014

A project with INVENTAS AS under the MAROFF programme for maritime activities and offshore operations, to study a compact SOx and NOx removal step for ships.

What happened, and when

  • The project with INVENTAS and MAROFF started on 12 May 2014.
  • On 29 September 2015 diesel exhaust was cleaned in a trial at the EagleBurgmann Norway laboratory. Exhaust deposits collected from an offshore site were diluted into water and sprayed directly into the separator.
  • The trial used the scaled-down Lynx 150, a unit built for very small liquid volumes. It separated all particles and liquid, and let only clean gas through.
  • The Norwegian Research Council profiled the technology in the DEMO 2000 publication Technology Efforts of the Century in 2014.
  • Chemical Engineering magazine covered the separator in October 2015, under the title A new spin on liquid-gas separation.
  • Innovation Norway profiled the application in The Explorer in 2019.
