Heat exchange

Preconditioning of ventilation air ahead of a heat exchanger

Verified in lab (2023)

Tested under controlled conditions. The level records the highest step reached, with the year.

The problem

Heat exchangers are sensitive to liquid and contamination in the air. Deposits build up on the surfaces and the efficiency falls. EU rules require 78 per cent efficiency for all commercial ventilation, kitchen air included.

What the Lynx separator does

The Lynx separator conditions the air before it reaches the heat exchanger, so that liquid and particles do not settle on the surfaces.

The work followed from the results in commercial kitchens, where the same separation removed grease before the duct.

A heat exchanger that stays clean can be built smaller for the same duty.

What happened, and when

  • SkatteFUNN awarded R&D support for the Lynx HeatExchange separator on 24 March 2023.
  • The project set out to find the causes of build-up and contamination on heat exchangers, and whether the Lynx separation process can address them.
  • InnSep carried out the research as applied for.
